For all that markets, people and thinking have changed, one thing that hasn’t is the need to be noticed and believed. It was recognised by Leo Burnett then, and it still stands today.
Getting someone to notice an ad is not that hard. Simply show an unnecessarily shocking image and off you go. Ensuring someone believes you is a little trickier — and that shocking image is unlikely to help here.
Creating an ad that people will notice and is believable is where the real magic is.
And on top of that, each ad needs to meet the needs of your particular business and area of expertise. For example, in business-to-business advertising the work needs to make the life of your sales people easier. In mail-order you need to find a way to get people to buy direct. Manufacturers need to please both their potential consumers as well as the shops that stock their product (as both are their customers).
